the Iron Bank Building
circA. 1860
The Historic Iron Bank Building, the largest cast iron building in the state of Georgia, was built in 1860 for the First National Bank of Columbus. An innovative architectural feat of the mid-nineteenth century, the pre-fabricated cast iron facade was manufactured in Pittsburgh and New York and erected on site to emulate similar Venetian Palazzo style structures gaining popularity in cities like Manhattan. The First National Bank of Columbus owned the entire city block on Broadway and operated in the Iron Bank Building for a brief six years before relocating. The building then came under the ownership of the Georgia Home Insurance Company throughout the 1880s and the turn of the century. Throughout the years the Iron Bank Building took on the nickname “the White Bank” and was home to a number of banks. The interior of the building was completely renovated in 1919 due to a fire. Eventually the First National Bank of Columbus acquired the Iron Bank Building once again. Through a series of mergers beginning in the 1980s First National Bank of Columbus has now dissolved into Wells Fargo and the Iron Bank Building is now home to several thriving local businesses including the beloved Iron Bank Coffee Co.
